Learn the Basics
What are OSS values?
Respect – recognizing other people’s views, even when they are different from your own.
Collaboration – remaining open to building trust and genuine connection.
Courage – sharing parts of your story, even if it feels unfamiliar.
What makes OSS different?
One Small Step programs are not about debating or changing anyone’s mind. They are simply about listening and remaining curious about someone else’s story.
We want participants to both expect and welcome differences. At the same time, participants may be surprised by how much they have in common.

Listen to examples of how everyday people are taking one small step in one-to-one conversations.
Every conversation helps you practice three main skills.
Listen Closely
We say things with more than our words. Listening for tone, pacing, and feeling helps you truly understand someone.
Ask Genuinely
The most meaningful questions come from true curiosity and help you deepen your understanding of the other person.
Share Openly
Stories reveal the values behind our beliefs. When you share the “why,” others can understand where you’re coming from.
