Deep Listening

A Guided Listening Activity

The Deep Listening Handout is a structured listening activity that helps participants hear more than just the words being spoken. Using short audio clips from One Small Step conversations, this tool guides listeners to notice multiple layers of meaning — including actions, skills, relationships, emotions, and values.

Rather than focusing on responding or reacting, the activity builds the ability to listen for understanding, curiosity, and care.

  • This handout is designed to be printed and used in group or individual listening activities.
  • This activity uses short clips from real One Small Step conversations. Visit the One Small Step YouTube playlist to choose an audio clip (about 2–3 minutes) that works for your group.
  • As participants listen, they’ll use the handout to notice different layers of meaning — from emotions and relationships to values and strengths.
  • Build listening skills in classrooms, workshops, or trainings
  • Practice empathy without debate or persuasion
  • Prepare for or reflect on One Small Step conversations
  • Support youth and adults in naming emotions, values, and strengths
